We love Thirsk.
Also all the places we can visit from there.
Always have a meal in Bianco's.
Vale of York has been taken over and done up. We were surprised at how well it looked after our visit last July.
Went there for a couple of drinks. But next time will go there for a meal too.

It was fun to see where author James Herriot (Alf Wight) lived, worked, and wrote. The nearby church where he was married is nice to visit and there are nice shops and restaurants in the village. We ate at The Golden Fleece and had coffee and pastry at a bakery. The train station was about a mile from the village; we walked it, but there are taxis that can be called. The village is very walkable.

Some interesting shops, Herriots was good value for money and the walks around the town were lovely although there was snow on the ground. Good entertainment in the Golden Fleece watching the staff cock up all the orders for meals and drinks! Beware of the unpleasant traffic warden who comes all the way from Scarborough so has to earn his corn and also the pieman opposite Neros which we happen to cross swords with.Staff in Herons and the Coop were exceptionally helpful.

Thirsk is a lovely place to visit.
Thirsk is a lovely place to visit. There are many cosy teashops (Upstairs, Downstairs was our preferred choice with a great selection of snacks, main meals (including daily specials) and cakes! A great Italian restaurant (Bianco), which I can highly recommend - but do book - we booked for a Wednesday evening and it was very busy! There is also a good selection of bakeries for yummy cakes, cookies and breads! Lots of charity shops for a few bargains, Co-Op, Boots & WH Smith. There is also a large Tesco supermarket just out of the town.
A visit to Thirsk wouldn't be complete without a visit to The World of James Herriot - it was brilliant!
There is also a lot of parking, both short and long stay.
All in all a great time was had by us, and I wouldn't hesitate in returning to Thirsk again!
Fab hotel above a Weatherspoons. Old but quaint. Really enjoyed my stay at Thirsk for one night. Creaky floor boards but that was my only downside. Loved the complimentary Bottles of water. Buiscults and included was tea, coffee and Cadbury hot chocolate.. We had the mixed grill In Weatherspoons this was really nice and bar prices great. Well worth a visit. Parking near by longstay for £9.50 up to three days so very reasonable.
Great location close to Thirsk. A lovely old hotel with extensive menu - great food. We had intended to go back into Thirsk for dinner but after seeing the menu choice it was any easy decision to eat at the Old Oak Tree. Room was in a row of four adjacent to the main building, was modern with everything we needed and spotlessly clean. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
We loved the location- near Thirsk, the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales. We loved the accommodations- VERY nice and comfortable. James and Julie are great hosts. We also loved that the cottage was a rehabilitated farm building (amazing job of restoration) and is situated on a working farm. Alf Wight (James Herriot) was actually their vet.
The location is great for Thirsk town centre, lots of art galleries around together with pubs. Northallerton is close by 20 minutes in the car which is great for shopping and having lunch, you should also try The Crab and Lobster pub just outside Thirsk great food, wine list and service.
We will be back to The Old Surgery sooner rather than later.
Warm friendly cosy atmosphere. The breakfasts were first class and anything we asked for we got even what was not on the menu. We dined both evenings and the food was excellent.
My wife and I were really well looked after and nothing was a problem to the staff. We had a very enjoyable stay and would not hesitate to recommend The Kings Arms.
The cottage was cosy, well appointed and freshly decorated to a high standard. Plentiful pots & pans, crockery and cutlery. The garden was pretty with a comfortable covered seating area that wasn't overlooked by neighbours; we were even visited by a very cute hedgehog! The town square is only a couple of minutes walk away.
The room was clean, and the beds were comfortable. Lovely large room with 3 single beds. Coffee/facilities. Being able to open the windows was great. Being able to eat in the bar/restaurant downstairs. A couple of mins from train station. 15 min walk to Thirsk racecourse. Staff were really friendly and helpful.
Beautiful peaceful location. A very comfortable cosy cottage with an excellent kitchen which has everything you would need for a self catering break. Would definitely return if in the area and would recommend to others.
We enjoyed the warm Yorkshire welcome, the ambience of a friendly small pub hotel; the food was excellent and the little hamlet quiet and peaceful. It was a haven from a very busy week.
Location fantastic for visiting Thirsk and nearby North Yorkshire attractions. Breakfast was excellent. Geoffrey was an excellent host and nothing was too much trouble.
Great location, quieter hotel, friendly and helpful staff, comfortable rooms, old world charm, good onsite restaurant and bar. Appreciated the daily room service.
